About Us: Meet the team

Shepherds Markets; The Good Food Market is a family run business dedicated to providing London with the highest quality food markets whilst encouraging the growth of small businesses through the Startisans scheme.

It is run by the three Shepherd Sisters Kitty, Alex and Fi*, daughters of John Shepherd. Janak Desai is the logistical man on the ground and technical advisor. As a former engineer and trained commercial pilot, he flies around the markets, keeping things in check.

History

John Shepherd is the Managing Director of Partridges of Duke of York Square on the Kings Road and has many years’ experience in the world of food. He is credited as being a specialist in this field and also provides consultancy to locations which wish to start up markets, with guest appearances on the BBC’s Apprentice, Sky’s Cooks to Market as well as a column in Speciality Food Magazine.

In 2005 he started a market outside his shop Partridges as a way of bringing something new and exciting to the area. Following on from the success of that in 2008 the idea was transported to the Brunswick Centre near Russell Square to regenerate the area and from there the idea of Shepherds Markets grew.

In 2015, Partridges won The Peoples Choice Award and Retailer of the Year at the Family Business United Awards.

Shepherds Markets now has around twenty markets across London which are not only popular but also recognised to be sustainable, ethical and community building. The Shepherd Sisters and Janak ensure all is in order and Maria Shepherd also helps out and is integral part of the company.

In 2008 John Shepherd as a World Trader took part in a ceremony to celebrate the ancient right of walking a sheep across London Bridge as a Liveryman of The City of London. That original sheep was the model for our logo and our inspiration for our mascot: Sunny.

Credited as The Good Food Market the team have brought the ethos of a family run business to the fore, incorporating to us what the traders are – family.
